WTF has Sid the Kid done to warrant the almost cult like hatred he gets from fans in many NHL cities most notably Washington and Philadelphia? How is that suddenly Alex Ovechkin is beloved, annointed by the morons on VS as "by far the best hockey player in the world" and Malkin is mostly regarded as second fiddle to both? First things first, SID:
OK, it does appear as if he complains too much sometimes, but consider this about Sid:
At the age of sixteen years old while most of the haters were busy accomplishing big things like bagging groceries for minimum wage and lighting farts for laughs, Sid was representing Team Canada in the World Junior Championships, only the 5th person in HISTORY to do so at that age! Two years later he was part of the team that WON the world junior championships. In his last year in the QMJHL as a member of the Rimouski Oceanic and 17 years of age, Sid was the QMJHL Player of the Year, Top Rookie and Top Scorer......what were you haters doing at age 17?
Sid was the first overall pick in the 2005 NHL entry draft and at the age of 18 became the youngest player EVER to break 100 pts, netting a cool 102 on a garbage team, with garage league talent on his wings much of the time.
In 2006 at the age of 19, Sid scored 120 pts to win the ART ROSS trophy as the NHL's leading scorer, the HART MEMORIAL MVP as voted by the Hockey Writers Association and the Lester B Pearson MVP as voted on by the NHL Players Association..........He is only the 7th person in history to win all three in the same season, and at this point he is two years away from being able to buy a beer? All of these accomplishments in the first two years while a KID dealt with the pressure of being annointed the face of the NHL, etc. How many of you haters could deal with the pressure of doing your laundry and making it to PSYCH 100 at the same time at that age? Thought so!
In the 2007-08 season at the age of 20, Sid was made the youngest captain ever in the NHL, and led his team to within two pts of the Stanley Cup. He tied Pavel Datsyuk with the most pts in the playoffs, and two more Pens wins would have made him the MVP of the playoffs. Prior to an injury causing him to miss 29 games, Sid had a comfortable lead in the NHL scoring race and still finished with 72 points. He surely would have won his second scoring title in his three career. For most players that is a big year if they played in all 82 games! By the way, at this point he still cant buy a beer. You haters were eating two day old pizza out of the back seat of your car and drinking beer in the parking lot of your morning Statistics Class......ok, so that was me, but you get the point!!!
Here it is 2008, and again Sidney is in the thick of the scoring race, currently second with 92 pts, barring injury will break 100 again, NEVER in any trouble off the ice, shown over and over visiting sick kids in the hospital, paying for a charity suite and smiling while idiots press against his car every where he goes begging for an autograph.....ok, I have done that once or twice too, but still. WTF does he have to do??
Finally, the Craps fans recently learned what Flyers fans are still figuring out.....the more you abuse him, the more he hurts your team on the scoresheet! I LOVED the silence in the Verizon Center when Sid buried the first goal of the game, and the winning shootout goal creating a silence in that arena that was more than golden!!
Oh yeah, for all of you people who scream how much better Ovechkin is, consider this;
Sid has 386 pts, AO 400 in the same time span(Sid has played in approximately 25 less games).......
Sids career PPG is 1.38......AO is 1.27
Sids plus/minus is +34 and AO is +20
Sids shooting % is 13.9% and AO is 12.3
You have never heard one of Sids coaches question if he is playing for individual stats like Bruce Boudreau recently did........Sorry I will take Sid over AO any day...........but guess what?? Geno is as good as either one of them!! Lets look at Genos stats, with one year fewer in the league:
First Geno scored 85 points in his rookie year winning the Calder Memorial as the Rookie of the Year in 2006-07. In 2007-08 Geno scored 106 pts but most importantly, HE CARRIED THE PENS ON HIS BACK TO THE SECOND SEED IN THE EASTERN CONFERENCE IN SIDS ABSCENCE!!!
Currently, Geno has a healthy lead over both Crosby and Ovechkin netting 102 pts with 10 games remaining. His career stats compare favorably to both as well:
293 pts in one less season
1.26 pts per game
a plus/minus of +37
a shooting percentage of 14.4%
Geno MAY be the most gifted overall of the three, only the next 15 seasons will tell, but enjoy these guys, they are true stars, and especially in the case of Crosby, true gentlemen. Ovechkin until the middle of this year struck me as an exuberant player, who was also a class act, and a player to be loved no matter your team. His recent behavior has put him closer and closer to the hockey equivalent of TO to me.........I hope someone talks sense to him, because he is the most gifted pure goal scorer and hitter of the three........but he has also become the least classy recentlly. Back to my original in closing........Sid is not perfect, nobody is.........but when you look at his accomplishments on and off the ice, look at his age, and still feel the need to spew hatred for this kid becuase he wears the Penguins sweater and not the sweater of your team, you are not a true fan of the game
