The Pens lost again tonight, 3-2 to Anaheim. Same old story, played well in the 1st and third, sucked in the second. So again, not a 60 minute game. Fleury was not horrible, but Hiller was better. Evelyn Malkin is missing, have you seen him/her? Crosby broke a goal scoring drought, getting both of Pittsburgh's goals. I am tired of writing about losing efforts, so I will do some numbers blurbs for your "enjoyment."
If .500 hockdey is mediocre, the Pens have been basically that for the past season and a quarter....since posting a torrid 9-1 start at the beginning of last year's campaign the Penguins are just 51-48, or barely over .500. Their lack of focus, systemic play, and consistency makes me unsure that Disco Dan is the man for this team;
They have lost 5 of the past six games this season;
Evelyn Malkin has just one lonely assist in the past 5 games, and is a -8 in that span. According to NHL.com he is 77th in the league in scoring. I am pretty sure that Shero was expecting more for 8.7M;
Malkin at -5 has the worst +/- of all Pens forwards, and second worst on the team to Z's -6;
Malkin is 3rd on the Pens in scoring, but 3 people have more goals(Crosby, Letestu and Dupuis), while 4 more "snipers" have as many(Letang, Cooke, Goligoski, and Kennedy);
3 of the Pens top 7 scorers are defensemen;
After a rookie of the year type start, Mark Letestu has 0 points in his last 7 games;
Paul Martin is also scoreless in his past 7 games;
Kris Letang was the top scorer among NHL defensemen at the end of last night;
Fleury has given up 3 or more goals in all 7 of his starts and has 3.31 GAA and .861 save percentage. He ranks 44th in save percentage and 39th in GAA;
Despite a mediocre effort on Wednesday in Dallas, Johnson has given up 2 or less goals in 6 of 7 starts and carries a 1.70 GAA and a .941 save percentage. This puts Johnson at 5th in save percentage, and 6th in GAA;
Only six teams have a worse power play percentage than the Pens at 12.9% and three of them were not even in the playoffs last season;
Crosby now has 17 points, 8 goals and 9 assists to trail Stamkos of Tampa by 3 points for the league scoring lead;
Crosby is winning 58.3% of his faceoffs;
